Hai, an eight year old child growing up in the war-torn country of Vietnam in the 1950s, witnesses a devastating blow to his family when Communist agents kidnap his older brother. His older brother’s long-time friend, a secret Communist agent is the villain behind this horrendous crime. Almost all of the Communist abduction victims vanish forever or their beheaded corpses are dumped at the edge of the thick woods in his poor little village. This incident creates a crease in Hai’s mind about the Communists’ grievous treatment of the innocent Vietnamese people.
With the full support of the Communist bloc, the guerrilla war initiated by the Communist North Vietnam escalated to a full-scale conventional engagement and ultimately the South Vietnamese government collapses in 1975.
The new totalitarian regime revokes all of the people’s basic freedoms and creates havoc for the country’s economy by establishing highly inefficient agriculture cooperatives and a moribund command economy policy. The oppression of freedom, collapse of the economy, the confiscation of people’s properties and forcing them to the new economic zone pushes people to flee the country by any means imaginable.
Recalling painful memories from his own childhood and seeing nothing but a dark future for his children, Hai decides to flee the country.
Inflicted with poverty and the strict control of the government’s brutal security apparatus, Hai and his friends work tirelessly in this precarious situation to escape Communist Vietnam. Their plan is dangerous, bold and risky but they successfully flee the country in 1981 by boat through the heavily guarded river mouth of Rach Gia province in the South of Vietnam.
Immigrating to the USA, the family works very hard to assimilate themselves in this wonderful country and they are now living a comfortable life in North Carolina.

This book is about Freedom. In many places in the world including the USA, it is under attack. Do you value your freedom? Do you ever think about it? Read the Bill of Rights in the US Constitution and then buy and read this book. You will gain a perspective and appreciation of freedom that you most assuredly are taking for granted. How do you put a value on daily freedoms? Is freedom worth risking your life and that of your family? The author believed so. In his compelling life-story, Dai Nguyen displays many admirable traits, which undoubtedly are responsible for his success in escaping the brutal regime of post-war Communist Viet Nam. Among those traits are a faith in God, a tireless work ethic, and a keen mind for problem solving. The author couples this with patience and endurance not common in our society today. Dai came to America seeking an opportunity for a better life. Fleeing a life of oppression in Viet Nam, he and his family built a not-so-typical American life to be admired. Reading this book will not only cause you to reflect on words like refugee and immigrant but challenge you to appreciate the precious freedom we have in the United States of America.

I Touched Freedom edition by Day Nguyen Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

If you want to understand what life was like when the US pulled out of South Vietnam, read this book. It will help put life in perspective and make you appreciate your freedom. I've suggested it to several friends. It's a good read.
Being a two tour Vietnam veteran I purchased the book as soon as I heard about it. It was an amazing read because I was familiar with the country it’s people and terrain. I could not put the book down. Day impressed me with his planning determination and especially his dedication with proctecting his family. All Vietnam Veterans need to read about this dedicated and courageous man.
It was inspiring to read what one man was willing to do in order to lead his family to freedom. This is a vivid account of life under communist rule in Vietnam, and is a gripping story of how the author suffered through hardships and took great risks to escape with his family.
Living in America, we sometimes take freedom for granted since it is readily available like oxygen in the air and that we don't even think it exists.
The author felt like being suffocated when he lost all basic freedom under the tyrannical Communist regime, he made a bold decision to get his family out of Vietnam by boat. His trip was so risky and full of difficulty, I think you would appreciate the freedom we have here in this beloved country after you read the wonderful story on how he escaped Vietnam in the 1980. I strongly recommend this book to all American and Vietnamese youth.

This is a super story. The drive and persistence of this family to save themselves is astoundingly remarkable. Sometimes the book gets a little tedious but it is precisely because of this that enables the reader to best understand the extreme planning and intricate logistics involved with this family escaping poverty and persecution in Vietnam to become free Americans.
This is an amazing story that you will not be able to put down.. I am a first generation American born son of parents that escaped from communism, so I can readily identify with the author's amazing sacrifice, courage, hard work, resilience, discipline, and faith in God towards achieving a better life and future for his family. This story is a blue print for a life well lived with purpose and meaning. It is a story that should be read by all Americans and taught in our schools to re-instill a sense of the uniqueness of this country and an appreciation, gratitude, and love for this country. These are sentiments that over the last 20 years have seen a steady erosion from the national consciousness. Yes, America may have it many faults, but nonetheless she is truly a great nation and a hope to the world because immigrants like Day.
If you are looking for an authentic, first-hand account of life under an authoritarian regime and the indelibility of the human spirt to overcome its cruelty – look no further. In his book, Day Nguyen provides his readers with a first-hand account of his native country’s spiral into poverty and despair following the collapse of the South Vietnamese regime in 1974 and of the emotional toll wrought by his desperate attempts to provide for his young family under the circumstances. It is a gripping story of persistence, bravery and ingenuity in the lead up to the family’s ultimate escape - I literally could not put the book down during the last several chapters. The book would make an excellent read for young adults – particularly for high school level history or civics curricula.
